Gulf Coast Live: Arts Edition – West Coast Black Theater Troupe / Charles Ross’s One-Man Star Wars Trilogy

The 10-year-old West Coast Black Theater Troupe aims to diversify Sarasota’s cultural landscape with theater and musicals that celebrate the African American experience. We’ll meet founding artistic director Nate Jacobs and hear about their season, starting with Ain’t Misbehavin’.

Also, Charles Ross’ One-Man Star Wars Trilogy. He plays all the characters, recreates the effects, sings from John Williams’ score, flies the ships, and fights both sides of the battles adding fact and editorial asides. He’ll be at the Asolo Repertory Theatre and at the Lee County Alliance for the Arts in December.

Who Wants Our Water? On First Coast Connect

Central Florida wants our water. The plan for draw 262 million gallons of water per day from the St. Johns River is creating a frenzy over the river. Neil Armingeon, the St. Johns Riverkeeper, was here today with the latest information.

And there is a new Aids test that could allow earlier detection of HIV infection. Host Melissa Ross spoke with Dr. John Hackett Jr. with Abbott Diagnostics about this new test.

Also, Crystal Jones, executive director for Teach for America Jacksonville, spoke about the organization which places recent college graduates in low-income community schools to teach and inspire these students.

Melissa Ross got to speak with the newly crowned Miss Senior Jacksonville, Myrle Odessa Wright.

Finally, the Oak Leaf Gators children’s football team from Oak Leaf Junior High went to the
Pop Warner Superbowl Championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. Mike Terrell, coach of the Oak Leaf Gators, and 11-year-old Jaques Jones, talked with Melissa about how his team won third place in the championship.
