Gulf Coast Live: Environmental Impact of Phosphate Mining / Mercury Levels in Fish and People

The U-S Army Corps of Engineers is conducting an Environmental Impact Statement for phosphate mining in an area including Hardee, Manatee & Desoto Counties. Environmental groups say it’s long overdue, and that phosphate mining hurts the Peace River watershed. The phosphate industry disagrees, and calls Florida’s phosphate and the fertilizer it’s made into is a vital ingredient in the world’s food chain. We’ll learn more.

And we’ll discuss research at FGCU on mercury levels in fish, and people.

Guests: John Fellows – the Corps’ project manager for the Areawide EIS. Brian K. Birky, Ph.D – Public and Environmental Health Research Director with the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. Glenn Compton – spokesman for the environmental group Manasota-88. / Dr. Darren Rumbold – FGCU Associate Professor of Marine Science.

The show will be live at Noon on 90.1 FM
